"Bird Ringing" in Guludo

files/measuring bird.jpg

Yesterday was the first ever day of “bird ringing” in the Guludo area. Ornithologist Malcolm Wilson arrived here in Guludo yesterday afternoon with a team of local trainee bird guides itching to see what ornithological delights they could find and, 24 hours later they are certainly not disappointed.

Malcolm and the team have put up mist nets at strategic places around the lodge to carefully catch birds. Once caught the birds are weighed, measured, recorded and an identification ring is put onto their leg with a unique identification code. Then the birds are carefully let go, occasionally being kind enough to pose for the camera first.

Malcolm’s visit to Guludo is part of a larger expedition where he is both identifying and ringing birds as well as training local guides all within the Quirimbas National Park, supported by WWF.
