After spending the last two days watching Malcolm and his team enthusiastically dashing around the lodge catching, identifying and releasing birds I asked him what was so special about the birds around Guludo. Here is his response;
“This is a dream location for any bird enthusiast simply because of the diversity of birds due to the variety of habitats here; all within a 5 minute walk of the lodge. The concentration of birds is very high indicating healthy habitats and because of this people can come here and tick off vast numbers of birds in their bird books very easily, including several endemic coastal species.
However, for me, the most exciting thing here is that we are on the edge of an extremely under-researched area where very little is known about the birds, or in fact all flora and fauna.
To top it all off, it’s pretty special that Guludo is situated in such a spot and has the facilities to dive, see humpback whales, visit islands and spend time with the community as well as host such diverse bird life. I am very much looking forward to coming back.”
As well as his research and training local bird guides Malcolm also runs bird expeditions for bird watchers and bird ringers. He will hopefully be running an expedition here in Guludo. Mozambique, later in the year or early next year so please contact him through his website www.africanaffinity.com or email us for more details.
