How fair is a garden amid the trials and passions of existence. ~Benjamin Disraeli
My Lords, Ladies and Gentleman,
I hereby proclaim the Guludo Beach Lodge’s very own Vegetable Garden open!
You may think this a bit over the top for a mere trifle of a vegetable patch, but then you wouldn’t have seen the buzz that this ‘trifle’ has sparked around the lodge. And more impressively the gusto to which virtually every single member of staff has set about advising, planting, digging, building or even spreading goat manure on our fertile (fingers and toes crossed) plot of land.
Admittedly our first harvest is a bit of an experiment. We have combined the style of the Mozambican ‘Machamba’ and the classic British allotment to produce what we hope to be a grand variety of different herbs and vegetables that aren't typically grown in these parts. The Gardening team were quite perplexed when it was explained to them the different types of Radish we would be growing, they settled down quite happily when given a huge quantity of tomatoes to plant.
The main worry is a hungry family of monkeys, or even baboons.
No fence in the world could keep them out for long. Over much deliberating and speculation on what method to take, a fence has been built that will hopefully keep them out for long enough before someone can take note and chase them back to their Mango trees.
So, before I head back to oversee the construction of a small thatched shade over several lines of mixed salad leaves (protection from the summer sun is obviously vital!) I invite you all to come and enjoy the fruits of the teams labour! Either that or come take note of some very well fed Vervet Monkeys.
