Education

Before Nema started work, less than 1% of children went on to study at secondary school and less than 20% completed all 7 years at primary school. The underlying reason being the prohibitive cost and need for children to help gather food.

School Feeding Project
In 2006, 80 children regularly attended Guludo Primary School. Afrter the Global Angels feeding project started in January 2007 264 regularly attended for the whole year. Last year there were over 300 children recieving a nutritious meal a day and regularly attending. In October 2008 we extended the project to Ningaia feeding another 99 children daily.

Now, in 2009, we are expanding the feeding project to another village, providing a total of 550 children a nutritious meal every school day.

This increases in school attendance reflect the severe food shortages and value for food in the Guludo area. Each child receives a nutritious meal providing 80% of the child’s needs for the day. Alongside the feeding project we are supporting the schools in developing school farms to one day replace the food bought from central Mozambique.

Scholarships
In 2007 and 2008 a total of 49 local students have received full scholarships to study at secondary school. This year we have given 79 scholarships  although we are currently slightly short of funds (click here to read more). In the future we hope to provide support for vocational training.

Primary Schools
We are currently just finishing off building a primary school in Guludo and just starting to build another primary school in Ningaia village (the latter funded by Jojo Maman Bebe).

School Farms
Since the last quarter of 2008 we have been helping Guludo and Ningaia villages to establish school farms to teach improved agricultural techniques and provide nutritious food for the children.

How to Help

Nema has achieved a phenomenal amount in a relatively short time which is entirely down to the support we have received from past guests, friends and family.

Water

Every day over 6,000 children die world-wide from diseases caused by drinking unsafe water.
