WHEN IT'S GOOD TO FLY:
Amy and Neal ignored conventional wisdom and built a small, exclusive beach lodge in Mozambique, run on fair-trade principles: alleviating poverty, protecting the local environment and giving work to local people Sunday Times 2007
Forward-looking investors in the north are combining idealism – sustainable tourism and poverty reduction – with a variety of travel experiences: bush walks; beaches, boating, and water sports; historical venues and opportunities for cultural exchange...CNN Traveller 2007
Guludo Beach Lodge is charming, a resort that's kicking the norm: it's eco, ethical and bang-on.The Guardian 2005
Guludo is a perfect base from which to explore both the terrestrial and marine environment, and Amy is working with conservation groups to ensure that the these areas remain pristine. Based on the shore of a Humpback whale migration route, a research centre has been established to monitor their movements, where the whales pass by daily during the summer months.New Consumer 2006

Guludo Beach Lodge, Mozambique. An exclusive eco-lodge that is pioneering the adoption of the principles of fair trade in an area of extreme poverty. The Times 2006
(Top 20 deserted beaches in the world) Number 14, Guludo Beach. Elephants pick mangoes from trees and dugongs wallow in the shallows eating seagrass on this virgin white beach in the Quirimbas National Park... Guests staying at the Guludo Beach Lodge can explore the historic Ibo Island, once a major slave and ivory trading point, dive the unexplored coral reefs and join fishermen in their dug-out canoes. The Observer 2006
'With its array of sheltering thatched roofs, the little colony evokes archetypes of the primitive hut or desert island shelter (albeit reinterpreted for the modern tourist), but the buildings have a scale, dignity and materiality appropriate to their setting. If only everything built for tourists could be so physically and culturally tactful.'The Architectural Review 2005
At Guludo there's good diving and a wide sweep of (very tidal) beach, but the ethos at this British-run lodge is eco-tourism and fair trade. To this end the owners and managers are heavily involved in community projects, social upliftment and education and guests are encouraged to get stuck in too. The idea behind Bespoke Experience - of which Guludo is a part - is to create luxury resorts designed to complement the environment and help local people. In doing so it hopes to raise international benchmarks against which other ethical tourism companies can be measured.Getaway Magazine 2006
