Projects in Focus

Nema (UK-registered charity, no. 1113131) has adopted a fresh approach, looking at all the aspects that keep communities locked into poverty and empowering them to become economically independent and self-sufficient, while protecting the environment they rely so heavily upon. In the Guludo area:
  • Life expectancy is 38 years
  • Infant mortality 30%
  • Annual food shortages
  • Extremely poor health and education infrastructure
  • Unsustainable agriculture & fisheries practices threatening coral reefs and forests

Many thanks to Nema's other major supporters:

nema foundation

established by the founders of Guludo Beach Lodge

Their idea was to create an innovative and sustainable model to relieve poverty and protect the environment. The result being Guludo acting as an economic catalyst and Nema implementing projects through the financial and logistical support from Guludo. Although still in its infancy, this model has since become an award-winning and internationally applauded strategy for addressing extreme rural poverty and environmental degradation.

Nema has had phenomenal success in implementating life saving projects; giving a new generation hope for a future free from the chains of poverty. Some of Nema's most significant achievements include;
  • Over 10,000 women & children now sleeping under mosquito nets
  • Building and/or rehabilitating 25 water points (current project)
  • Hygiene & sanitation workshops in every household in 4 villages
  • Training for 12 village water committees
  • Construction of primary schools (both due to be completed ’08)
  • 49 secondary school scholarships
  • 5 enterprise groups
  • Feeding 264 children daily school meals in 2007 and now 403 in 2008.
